TMAC’s Commitment to Ethical Business Conduct describes standards of conduct related to the environment. These comprise ongoing and independent auditing of our environmental performance, continually evaluating the design and implementation of environmental management systems, benchmarking against industry best practice, and making the resources available for TMAC personnel to meet their environmental management obligations. In support of the standards of conduct, TMAC has a Corporate Social Responsibility, Safety, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee in place that is mandated with assessing environmental risks to the corporation, reviewing and amending environmental policies, standards, accountabilities and programs as needed, maintaining surveillance on the corporation’s policy and legislative compliance status, and responding to specific environmental matters as directed.
TMAC’s Environmental Management System and associated management plans provide the mechanism by which TMAC monitors and reports on the performance of the proposed mitigations to avoid, reduce, or eliminate adverse residual effects. Where practicable, the management plans include indicators and thresholds that are used to assess and evaluate performance of the proposed mitigation measures. The plans are reviewed and updated as required to incorporate adaptive changes or additional mitigation measures based on information and feedback collected by the monitoring programs. As per the requirements of the Project Certificates and the Terms and Conditions of Type A Water Licences for the Hope Bay Project, TMAC reports monitoring results on a monthly or annual basis. These monthly and annual reports can be reviewed on the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) public registry (www.nirb.ca) and the Nunavut Water Board (NWB) public registry (www.nwb-oen.ca).
